I have had a habit for over a decade now of buying junk food when I go to the grocery store. What I buy varies but it’s still fairly consistent: pizza rolls, pizza, cheetos, candy. Often more than one thing. Always Diet Coke too.
I hesitate to say its an addiction because I wouldn’t kill or steal to get a fix, but its an unhealthy obsession. I’ve found it hard to break this cycle, and it showed in my waistline.
This cycle of buying junk food - and eating it all the day I bought it - is a large part of the reason I was 300 pounds a few years ago.
I have made a lot of progress in breaking these bad habits. I typically go to the store once a week now, thanks to Covid, which means I only buy junk that often. I’ve also largely stopped buying more than one type of junk at a time, and I almost never buy candy these days.
My waistline is showing the results of that. Since March I have lost 20 pounds. I went from a size 22 to a size 18, and can button up a 16. But I’m stagnanting at 213 pounds and I’m not happy with that. I am so close to being under 200 pounds - and out of obesity - and I realize that if I want to get there I have to start changing the way I eat now.
I lost close to 100 pounds by just eating less of the junk I love so much, but now it’s time to get serious and make some changes.
I bought some meal plans from a website I like Budget Bytes and I’m going to be cooking meals with vegetables in them and packing away leftovers before serving them so I don’t overeat.
I am realizing I don’t like the way I feel physically on days when I eat the junk. If I would spread out the junk and eat some at a time and not all of it at once, that would be doifferent. But if I could do that I wouldn’t need to have lost 100 pounds either!
So no more extra junk on shopping trips. I will still plan on buying something every once in a while, because I don’t believe in giving up foods permanently. But for a while the only snack food I will have in my house will be popcorn.
I will, of course, still keep buying Diet Coke. It’s zero calories, and the only drink other than water I really like. I have the occasional glass of Crystal Light and a cup or two of coffee every day, but otherwise I drink nothing but water. It’s nice to have something else that I like to break things up.
