Mitered Squares

A mitered square is a garter stitch square worked by casting on twice as many stitches as the finished size calls for then on every RS row decreasing by two in the center of the row. When you reach one stitch remaining the square is finished. This technique works to create a square because knit stitches are all the same height. Stockinette stitch uses both knits and purls, and purls are slightly longer than knit stiches. This combonation will not create a square unless you take the time to account for the size difference between the stitches.

The tutorials on this page are all worked in garter stitch.

Nimble Needles has an excellent tutorial for working a basic mitered square, as well as a tutorial on using two different colors, and two tutorials using a centered double decrease instead of a ssk/k2tog set of decreases. The instructions are very clear and photos illustrate every step.
